When do you listen to podcasts

Listening to podcasts, in other words, is not a passive activity. If you were planning to sleep, that might not be so good. Before I discovered podcasts, I spent most of my alone time listening to music, which would lead my mind to happily wander.

While there is no specific research into the neurological distinctions between listening to music and listening to stories, from my experience, the latter is much more likely to be all-consuming.

But the benefits still likely outweigh the potential negatives, said Dr. Steve Schlozman, a practicing psychiatrist and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. And yet Schlozman did encourage me to find a little more balance in my day-to-day life. In addition to this broad scale survey data, we can learn more from in-depth interviews with podcast listeners. Podcasting newbies and podcast enthusiasts have different behaviors — but what about their values?

To dig into this question, we interviewed seven people who self-define as podcast enthusiasts, as well as drawing from fieldwork over the summer in Seattle and three European cities to understand listening behaviors. We learned a few key things from those studies, particularly around how people think about subscriptions, and how they learn about new podcasts. While avid podcast listeners may subscribe to a long list of shows up to 72 among the people we interviewed , they tend to be devoted to a smaller subset of shows, typically between 2 and 10, that they listen to on a regular basis.

For listeners who have a core set of shows in their regular rotation, diving into a completely new podcast requires a significant amount of mental effort and time. But having a long list of aspirational podcasts can be overwhelming. Relationships with podcasts come and go. But I definitely have gone through phases in my life. Every morning I eat oatmeal…. And then suddenly I hate that…I kind of feel like my podcast listening comes and goes and waves like that.

Podcast enthusiasts use many strategies to figure out what to listen to, but one strategy dominates: When we asked podcast enthusiasts how they discover new content, every single person brought up word of mouth. However, none of these strategies were as common, or as salient, as word of mouth or cross-promotion. Methods of content discovery can reinforce each other, producing a snowball effect.

One way podcasting is great as an educational tool, is that podcasts are accessible; they are a way for the common man to communicate to the masses without the use of mainstream media. This means experts from millions of industries can easily share insider tips with the masses. Now, instead of reading confusing manuals or becoming bogged down with useless information, you can learn directly from knowledgeable people in a simple, effortless, and free tutorial.

And another great thing about podcasting is that—no matter what your interest—there are probably dozens of podcasts that will appeal specifically to you. Another benefit of the podcasting world is that we are no longer limited to receiving our news from the same three major networks.

Whether watching television or listening to the radio, news sources are pretty limited, and often untrustworthy. However, podcasts introduce tons of variety; the sheer volume of podcasts guarantees that you can find more than two or three perspectives on any given topic.

Trends show that millennials care about social responsibility in business. This means that millennials will boycott unethical companies such as Nike , support local or fair trade companies over large corporations, and buy from companies that partner with charities. This is evidenced by the huge support of TOMS, a brand that donates a pair of shoes for each pair they sell. With the exception of about a dozen leading networks, the majority of podcasts are small startups.
