The cloudy is the lead coming out due to heat and water. For best results, Riedel themselves have given a few guidelines that can help users wash their glasses safely in the dishwasher without breakages.
Maximilian Riedel, the Austrian manufacturer of the Riedel wine glasses, confirms that all the Riedel wine glasses are dishwasher safe. This has been tested in the laboratories and found out that Miele dishwashers to be the best with a lifespan of washing cycles. This translates to a lifespan of over 20 years. Avoiding contact with other glass or metal will keep the glass scratch free.
If possible, use a stemware rack to keep them in one place. They even recommend that your dishwasher be serviced once a year to avoid the wear and tear that can lead to glass breakage.
This means that the product will withstand being washed in a dishwasher without damage to the clarity or quality of the crystal. Stack your glasses well spaced out, so they are not touching one another or anything else. If available, use stemware rack in your dishwasher as it provides support and stops your glassware from moving around. To avoid stains or cloudiness: use soft water low mineral content To avoid scratches: Avoid glass contact with other glass or metal To remove superficial stains: soak your glasses in white vinegar.
Washing Using the dishwasher: We always recommend using a dishwasher as most breakages occur through accidental mishandling. Stack your glasses in the top rack and make use of the glass holder if your machine has one. If your machine has a glass wash setting, they can be carefully stacked in the bottom rack following the above instructions. If not, they will need to be hand-washed. Wash your glasses using warm water and a small amount of dishwashing liquid. Plan for five to 10 minutes per glass to wash and polish by hand.
But there are a few things you can do to ensure your glasses come out sparkling. The most important step is to load the dishwasher correctly. Place glasses securely upside down, without allowing them to touch dishes or one another to avoid scratching. Some dishwashers come with clips on the racks that you can use to secure glasses by the stem. If you can, place glasses in the upper rack though sturdier, thicker glasses will be fine on the bottom rack.
For particularly tall stemware, many dishwashers including all of the ones we recommend allow you to adjust the position of the upper rack to accommodate. Rinse aid will help prevent water spots. And using too much detergent especially the strong stuff can cause problems for your glassware. In the short term, excessive detergent may leave behind a soapy residue and scent, which will mar your experience of a wine. In the long term, regularly overdoing it on detergent can etch your glassware, making it cloudy.
And try switching detergents some have stronger scents than others. A wet glass can easily slip from your fingers or just knock against the sink. Twisting the stem as you scrub can also put strain on it, causing it to snap.
But if you must hand wash your wine glasses, we recommend using a bottle brush to clean them without twisting and rubbing. Hold the glass firmly by the stem and gently scrub the bowl inside and out with wet, soapy water.
