I have worked with hand also for many years on and off… First in the UK in my youth a day then as employee 1 at Media Ventures! Thanks for the nit… Nico. The thing is a masterpiece and the hoops that he and Arthur Morton put the Fox Orchestra through are astounding. Long live good film music! Great piece, thanks for sharing. Still upset he missed out on Conception Academy award.
And, have to say it….. I learned more from this article than I ever learned pouring over my Music theory books. I rather say some other composers and music creators can do much better and tremendously successful job. Only difference is most of the productions stick to cliche trends than trying new talents taking risk, even if it sounds promising and give much better results..
Seriously — they might be good composers… but reading their words when it comes to film composition… is insulting! Insightful points about focus and outside-the-box creative problem-solving. Thanks for this. On a tangent, I was hoping to see that there were some women in this world, none noted in the list of names of talent in the article.
In my haste, I left out Kathryn Bostic and Lily Haydn on my list of film composers who happen to be women. There are many more, of course. Kathryn is also African-American, another underrepresented group in the film composer world. It would be an interesting topic for another article as why film composing is such a white boys club and how it could be changed.
To reduce music to an element that supports something else, something trivial, is, to me and my art, a sacrilege. I did it once when I urgently needed money. Now, fortunately I am in a position not to have to do it anymore. True art should stand independently and not be reduced to background noise for some Hollywood nonsense.
Since leaving Remote, many people have said to me, usually in a conspiratorial. Because he can take it. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight. Thank you Michael, for your insightful, in depth and accurate portrayal of Hans. From the earliest of days when his studio was housed at the old Wilder Bros on Santa Monica in Century City to his current teeming complex, Hans has made a welcomed home for filmmakers. Hans, by his very nature and talent is a true filmmaker.
His work and imprint begins long before he plays the first note, long before principal photography, long before the shooting script is final. In the land of Hollywood where … Read more ». Jim Salber. Chris Neel. Michael A. William Anderson. It was a very interesting read, Mr. Levine, but it did not dissuade me from my enduring opinion of Mr. That being: he is a soundtrack composer, and not a film composer. And not a very good composer, per se.
Hello William Anderson! I could not agree with you more. Big drums with blocky brass writing is not at all an art but rather taking one sound and expanding it as much as possible.

The possibilities are endless… The sounds and music that can be created goes beyond our imagination!! Sebasitian, I think you misread what I wrote. I clearly stated that I do intend to utilize all the innovations in sound design, orchestration and approach to film music and further up on them.
I have been lucky enough to work on a few of them this past year. What I meant of the ideals of John Williams and Goldsmith was meant with the sense of the artistry of it rather than the mass production and limited musical language this comes into the notes themselves not the sounds or instrumentation which I think Hans Zimmer is genius at of using … Read more ».

I feel you have a fantastic career ahead of you and look forward to hearing the great works you will certainly write. He will always maintain a Top 5 Greatest Film Composer status in human history. The closest in comparison in terms of quality is Ennio Morricone. Also, you are so determined that Mr. Hans Zimmer's work on Inception , a movie with plenty of behind-the-scenes trivia and facts , is some of his most iconic, and it's difficult to find a trailer for a film that doesn't try to use very similar musical cues to add drama to their preview.
To copy does not always mean to achieve the same level of skill, though. Any musician's work in the film industry is often defined by the themes they have created. If they have a number of pieces that are particularly memorable, they will stand the test of time. If an audience member can leave a film with the music still in their head, then the composer has likely crafted a rousing piece.
Hans Zimmer's work speaks for itself. The previously mentioned Dark Knight, Inception , and Gladiator themes are all high up on his list of classics, as is his beautiful scoring of The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise and groundbreaking take on The Lion King. Hans Zimmer's music also accompanies the filmmaker's narrative in an incredibly specialist way.
His work on Dunkirk is a perfect example of this, another movie with a ton of behind-the-scenes facts , and shows how Zimmer's music can actually elevate the story told on screen. Dunkirk is all about the tension of war. It's unclear what might happen and Zimmer's score completely encapsulates that feeling of unease.
Throughout the production it builds and builds and builds, never quite hitting its final moment of victory and continuing to keep the audience on edge. This is storytelling at its finest. Christopher Nolan is one of the world's most universally renowned filmmakers. His directorial and writing work has been stellar and he has also produced a number of classics. Nearly all of Nolan's best films see him partner up with Hans Zimmer to create movie magic together.
Nolan and Zimmer's legacy will be interlinked forever. As Nolan is one of the most influential directors in cinema history, it only stands to reason that those he has come to trust also share a very similar moniker. Hans Zimmer was born in Frankfurt, Germany on 12 September His interest in music began at a very early age.
When Zimmer was 14 years old, he moved to England. Throughout his childhood, he was expelled from several different schools because he preferred to study music instead of his schoolwork.
The theme was used in the score for Wonder Woman composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams and Justice League composed by Danny Elfman , and again in the film Wonder Woman , which saw the return of Zimmer as composer. Describing an average fee for scoring a feature film has a similar problem.
