In my twenties, I had some angst about this—about not having a real job, or really wanting one. The ergonyms mutate, producing a public-health crisis called the Heath Cliff Disaster. The story is intercut with transcripts of government hearings, in which the dialogue is playful but the subject dire.
The main character is Tamaya Dhilwaddi, a conscientious fifth grader. Tamaya, on the other hand, agonizes over the trouble she might cause her parents. She almost goes blind. We had driven farther north in Austin, to St. Edwards Park, a hidden, wooded spot bisected by a creek. Sachar put on a bright-yellow baseball hat, and we trudged through the hip-high weeds of an overgrown hiking trail.
We talked about revision, the part of writing he likes best. A sort of good-natured restlessness was emerging from him, the kind you see in kids who can amuse themselves better on their own.
We had zigzagged slowly up to the top of the trail, and the creek rushed below us. I tried to see the world from their point of view.
On my most recent reread of the Wayside School trilogy, a moment at the end of the second book struck me: the school closes down, after a misunderstanding involving Mrs. Somehow we don't think that teaching strategy would be well-received in an ordinary elementary school, but it's still pretty satisfying to read about. What makes Louis unique is not his cool, easygoing attitude, his problem solving, or his availability to listen to kids who need an ear.
What makes Louis unique is that— somehow —he is the only person at Wayside School who knows that Wayside is "strange and silly. He tells them:. They can't turn mosquito bites into numbers. They don't count hairs on their heads. The walls don't laugh, and two plus two always equals four. How does Louis know all this? Why is he the only one who knows what ordinary elementary schools are like? We have no idea, but since ordinary rules don't seem to apply at Wayside School, it only makes sense that rules don't apply to Louis either.

He attempts to sugar-coat it by saying everyone else wanted the yellow ball, and he saved it specifically for her, but Deedee is unconvinced. By the end of the chapter, Deedee, who is disguised as a dead rat to get out of Mrs. Jewls's class, refers to him as her best friend, and Louis is glad, joking that he always wanted to be friends with a dead rat.

During Mrs. Drazil 's arc in Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger , Deedee works hard with some of the other students in her class, mainly Ron , Jason , and Sharie to help get Louis back to his old self after he shaves his mustache to appease Mrs.
Due to Terrence 's unsportsmanlike behavior, Louis frequently has to punish him for it. In " Ron ," Louis gets upset at Terrence because he won't share the ball with Ron , and makes him give him the ball if he won't share. In " Terrence ," Louis responds to Terrence kicking all the balls over the fence by kicking him over the fence as well.
In " Teeth ," he sends Rondi to take care of him, and expresses frustration when hearing about him stealing Jason and Stephen 's ball, and in " Lost and Found ," he is seen chastising Terrence for tying Leslie 's pigtails to the tetherball pole. Kidswatter flowers instead. However, he doesn't appear to like Mr.
Kidswatter, as he quickly refers to him as a "maggot-infested string bean. Kidswatter to a high standard, explaining that he needs to be nice to the kids for them to be nice to him in " The Gonnnnng ," and ending up surprised when he hears Mr.
Kidswatter did something nice in " Push-Downs. Kidswatter, however, seems to appreciate Louis in return, as he says Louis is like a son to him in "Flowers for a Very Special Person," and regularly enlists his help to wheel the gong to the bottom of the stairs every day in "The Gonnnnng.
