Schulz Museum, of Sonoma County's most notorious older sister. When Lucy Van Pelt learned of her youngest brother's birth 39 years ago in Schulz's Peanuts comic strip, she couldn't hide her despair. But I just got rid of the old one!!!
In her own way, she would have to accept the rising tide of brothers. The little moments of rivalry and others of fraternal sweetness are captured in a new exhibit on sibling relationships among the Peanuts bunch at the museum in Santa Rosa dedicated to Schulz's life and work. The show, which kicked off Saturday and runs until June 19, features 50 original Peanuts comic strips spotlighting both the squabbles and sincere moments shared between the Van Pelt siblings and between Charlie Brown and his younger sister Sally.
Clips from several Peanuts animated specials are also featured on a television situated in a child-sized recreation of the Van Pelt's living room.
The exhibit includes strips from throughout the 50 years of Peanuts, including the museum's earliest Peanuts comic, from Nov. It shows Snoopy as a puppy and Charlie Brown without the signature zigzag on his shirt.
Others show Sally Brown's ever-present exasperation at Charlie's shortcomings, including his tangled misadventures in kite-flying. Although I sometimes wonder if there wasn't a mix-up at the hospital the day I was born," Sally said in a February 20, strip.
Many of the highlighted moments are sweet. Lucy shows particular concern when Rerun appears to be at risk of adopting Linus' habits, telling him, "Your brother is a blockhead. Whereas Linus is apt to give up and just let Lucy dominate him, Rerun often shows a knack for getting around Lucy and weakening her defenses.
Rerun responds; "Probably nothing at the moment. But years from now after you're married and you and your husband want me to co-sign a note so you can buy a new house, I'll refuse. Rerun continues constructing his tower of building blocks and adds, "Younger brothers learn to think fast.
Rerun seems to have an innocent crush on the Little Pigtailed Girl , who sits next to him in their kindergarten class. He always talks to her in a flirty way, and she is often seen pointing out problems with his classroom drawings. In one strip he takes her to one of Charlie Brown's baseball games. One series of strips sees Rerun jokingly says she should run away to Paris. The girl believes Rerun, and she tells her mother about the joke. She tells her mother, followed by her mother who tells the teacher, followed by the teacher who tells the principal, and followed by the principal who calls in and tells Rerun's parents.
Then Rerun is suspended from school for one day, on the grounds of harassment. Snoopy and Rerun were first shown in the same strip on March 27, , when Snoopy greets the infant Rerun in his sandbox by licking his face. Snoopy then turns away, observing that Rerun "tastes terrible. In strips from the later years of Peanuts , Rerun repeatedly asks Charlie Brown if he can borrow Snoopy, as his mother will not let him have a dog of his own.
Snoopy and Rerun are often seen together in later strips, playing card games, throwing and chasing balls and frolicking in the snow. Rerun, younger than the other children in the strip, even treats Snoopy as a confidant at times, sharing his anxieties and thoughts with the beagle, who often responds with exasperated or sarcastic thoughts.
Charlie Brown and Rerun have little interaction with each other in strips from the s and s. The main exception being the storyline from in which Lucy convinces a reluctant Charlie Brown to let infant Rerun join his baseball team. After Rerun is instrumental in the team's win, Charlie Brown is later infuriated when the win is stripped from the team because Rerun had bet on the game. There is significantly more contact between the two in strips from the s after Rerun grew beyond infancy.
Rerun is often shown asking to be allowed to play on the baseball team and to borrow Snoopy. Charlie Brown is usually unwilling to let Rerun play on his team but is usually willing to let him play with Snoopy. Unlike the other children, Rerun comes to admire Charlie Brown. While watching Charlie Brown warm up on his pitcher's mound on one occasion, Rerun refers to him as "the Master.
Rerun only appears in five television specials, four episodes of The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show , and none of the movies with the minor exception of a picture of him in the credits for The Peanuts Movie , but he is the main character in I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown. Surprisingly, he does not appear in the most recent special Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown , despite being a major character in the strip's last decade. Ironically, he didn't appear in any of the specials released during the s in which was the peak of him popularity in the comic strip This may have been so he wouldn't overshadow his brother such as in the said strip.

Blurring some of Schulz's more sharply defined relationships only hurts that even more.
True, the Little Red-Haired Girl didn't appear physically in the comic strip, but that's easier to manage in a format that requires only four panels a day. In a cinematic format, it's trickier to tell a story about her in which she never appears, something that Schulz and his TV collaborators quickly learned when producing TV specials about her.
Schulz considered these TV appearances noncanonical, but didn't quash them, perhaps because he realized how hard it is to tell a story onscreen where a major character is never seen though the TV specials tried that too.

Schulz originally added those characters to give him something to "cut to," essentially, and to give the main kids an opponent in baseball and other sports. It's why Patty is always calling "Chuck" on the phone and why they rarely interact directly in the comic strip. Lucy is Linus's big sister and both are older siblings to Rerun, who doesn't play a major role in the film.
Though Charlie Brown and Lucy are roughly the same age, he and Linus are best friends. Age in the Peanuts universe is a bit wonky and elastic, particularly in the TV specials, but Schulz usually kept to these truisms. Thus, Charlie Brown isn't just some kid she hates.
